You’re on the last screen of your university admission form. You paste in your DEB ID. The portal throws back one line: Or the field just turns red and refuses to explain itself.
Every admission season, thousands of students hit this wall — usually close to a deadline, usually with no idea what’s wrong. The frustrating truth is that “invalid” is one error message covering at least eight different problems, each with a different fix. This guide walks through all eight, from most to least common, so you can identify yours and fix it today.
Last updated: [31st July 2026]. Portal screens change; the causes and fixes below stay the same.
Before Anything Else: The 30-Second Checks
Three trivially fixable causes account for a surprising share of “invalid” errors, so rule these out first.
Check 1 — Are you pasting the right ID in the right field? You have two separate numbers: your ABC ID (from the Academic Bank of Credits, made via DigiLocker) and your DEB ID (generated on the UGC DEB portal using the ABC ID). Forms often ask for both, and swapping them is the single most common cause of instant “invalid.” They are different numbers. Check which field wants which.
Check 2 — Typos and spaces. Copy-pasting sometimes drags an invisible space along. Delete the field completely and retype the ID by hand once.
Check 3 — Do you actually have a DEB ID? Many students created an ABC ID and assumed that was the whole job. It isn’t — the DEB ID is a second, separate step on the DEB portal. If you only ever used DigiLocker, you have half the requirement.
Still failing? Then it’s one of the deeper causes below.
The 8 Real Causes and Their Fixes
1. Name mismatch between Aadhaar and academic records
The heavyweight champion of DEB errors. Your ABC/DEB record pulls your name from Aadhaar. Your admission form uses your marksheet name. If Aadhaar says “Md Salim Khan” and your 12th marksheet says “Mohammed Saleem Khan,” validation can fail even though both are obviously you.
Fix: For the long term, align the mismatched record at its source — Aadhaar corrections happen at any Aadhaar enrolment centre; marksheet corrections go through your board (slower). For the immediate admission, contact the university’s admission helpdesk with both documents; universities deal with this constantly and can tell you the accepted workaround for the current cycle. Do not just keep retrying — the mismatch won’t fix itself.
2. Date of birth mismatch
Same disease, different symptom. DOB on Aadhaar differs from DOB on your 10th marksheet (the official DOB proof for academics). Fix: identical route to cause 1 — correct the wrong record at its source, and ask the university helpdesk for the current-cycle workaround meanwhile.
3. Freshly created ID hasn’t synced yet
You made your ABC ID an hour ago, generated the DEB ID right after, and the university portal says invalid. The databases sync on their own schedule, and a brand-new ID can take a few hours to a day to be recognised everywhere.
Fix: wait 12–24 hours and retry. And absorb the lesson this teaches every cohort the hard way: create these IDs a week before your deadline, never on the last day.
4. ABC ID not properly linked or incomplete
Sometimes the ABC creation flow gets abandoned midway — an OTP failed, a screen was closed — leaving a half-created record. The DEB portal then can’t find a valid ABC ID to build on. Fix: log back into DigiLocker, open the ABC section, and confirm your ABC ID actually shows as issued with your details attached. If it looks incomplete, regenerate it properly, then redo the DEB step.
5. Duplicate IDs
You created an ABC ID last year for college, forgot, and created another one now with a different mobile number. Duplicates confuse validation. Fix: identify which ID is linked to your Aadhaar (the DigiLocker route shows this) and use only that one consistently. If you genuinely have two live records, the ABC/DigiLocker support route is the deduplication path — start it early, it isn’t instant.
6. Mobile/OTP problems masquerading as ID problems
Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is inactive or with someone else in the family, OTPs never arrive, and every verification step fails in ways that look like ID errors. Fix: update your Aadhaar mobile number at an enrolment centre first. Nothing in this ecosystem works smoothly without a live Aadhaar-linked number in your own hands.
7. Portal overload near deadlines
In the days before major admission cutoffs, the DEB and university portals take a beating, and timeouts get reported as validation failures. Fix: try at low-traffic hours — early morning (6–8 AM) reliably works best — and don’t hammer submit repeatedly, which occasionally creates duplicate entries (see cause 5).
8. The programme itself is the problem, not your ID
The quiet, serious one. The DEB ecosystem validates enrolments against recognised institutions and approved programmes. If a “university” tells you the DEB ID step “isn’t working” or “isn’t needed for their programme” — that is not a technical glitch. It may mean the programme isn’t in the approved system at all.
Fix: verify the institution and your exact programme on the UGC DEB portal’s entitled/recognised lists for the current session before paying anything. A genuine programme appears there. This error saving you from a worthless degree would make it the best error you ever got.
The Decision Table
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Instant “invalid” on submit | Swapped ABC/DEB fields, typo | 30-second checks |
| Fails only at name/DOB verification | Aadhaar vs marksheet mismatch | University helpdesk + source correction |
| ID created today, fails today | Sync delay | Wait 24 hours |
| OTPs never arrive | Aadhaar mobile inactive | Update Aadhaar mobile |
| Everything fails at 11 PM before deadline | Portal overload | Retry 6–8 AM |
| University says “skip the DEB step” | ⚠️ Programme recognition issue | Verify on deb.ugc.ac.in before paying |
The One-Week Rule
Every cause above is fixable. What makes them disasters is discovering them with hours left. The name-mismatch fix involves a government office. The sync delay needs a day. The duplicate cleanup takes longer. So the rule that would prevent nearly every DEB horror story we hear: create and test your ABC ID and DEB ID at least one week before your admission deadline. Paste the DEB ID into the form early, see it validate, and only then relax.
FAQs
1. Why does my DEB ID show invalid when I just created it? Newly generated IDs can take up to a day to sync across systems. Wait 12–24 hours and retry — and next time, create the IDs a week before your deadline.
2. My name is slightly different on Aadhaar and my marksheet. Is that why it’s failing? Very likely — name and DOB mismatches with Aadhaar are the most common cause of DEB verification failures. Correct the wrong record at its source, and ask your university’s helpdesk for the accepted interim route.
3. Are the ABC ID and DEB ID the same thing? No. The ABC ID comes first (via DigiLocker), and the DEB ID is generated afterwards on the UGC DEB portal using it. Forms may ask for both — in separate fields.
4. Is there any fee to create or fix a DEB ID? No. Both IDs are free government services. Anyone charging to “create or repair” your DEB ID is charging for something free.
5. My university says I can skip the DEB ID step. Is that okay? Treat it as a red flag. The DEB ID is mandatory for recognised online/distance programmes — before paying any fee, verify the institution and your exact programme on the UGC DEB portal’s current lists.
